bayou city art festival

on friday, a colleague was giving away free tickets he had won to this weekend's bayou city art festival, and i jumped on the opportunity. the festival runs twice a year, once in the spring in memorial park (a large + lovely park in the heart of houston) and once in the fall downtown.  we have visited the fall festival, but had yet to visit the one in the spring.

first serger attempt

in january i introduced  the serger i got for christmas (which you can read about here), and promised to share with you my first serged project-  and here i am, keeping that promise. you would think that with such a fun new toy, i would drop everything and serge everything in sight.  amazingly, i did just the opposite.  i've been so busy that i didn't touch the serger again until this month, when i finally sat down and took the time to learn how to thread the machine.  threading was only slightly frustrating, as brother has done a fairly good job with their manual and with the color coded, numbered guide right on the serger.

i already had a throw pillow case i had sewn earlier this year that had been patiently waiting for me to serge the inside seams, so after i managed to successfully thread my machine, i zipped the edges through.

the pillow case is made out of marimekko lumimarja fabric in gold and white tones. it has an invisible zipper.

eventually i will make a second or even a third one. in my dreams, i have a drawer dedicated to a plethora of beautiful, neatly folded throw pillow covers so i can change them out on a whim.  but. i digress.

tada. a close up on a finished seam.  it makes me happy, even though no one will ever see it... unless i have guests with boundary issues who decided to dissect my pillow...  hey, it could happen.

a taste of spoonflower

last year i learned about spoonflower, a company that will print your designs onto fabric for you. i was very very excited about this, but as is normal with me, i simply didn't have the time to investigate more. so, i made a mental note, and filed it away for later. i found myself thinking about it again recently, and one evening, as i was busy dreaming about how delicious lotus root is and how it has been ages since i've had any, i was struck with some inspiration. i scribbled on a post-it note and the first draft of a new pattern was created. surprise, surprise, it was a drawing of a lotus root. soon after that, i created a digital image... and before i knew it, i had created a spoonflower account and ordered swatches of my pattern in three different color combinations. i waited semi-patiently, and a couple weeks later, my 8X8 inch swatches came in the mail.

i am quite pleased with the quality. the images are crisp and clear. the only issue i have is with the orange; it turned out a lot brighter than i had wanted, so i'm going to order another swatch (and perhaps a couple more color combinations). the other two color schemes, purple on lilac and green on light blue are available for purchase through spoonflower here. i also have a link on the side bar to the right. i am really looking forward to designing more fabric soon... but until then.... *clearlytangled runs off to buy more fabric to play with*

cinnamon cottage fever

one of my favorite items to shop for on etsy is jewelry. there is an incredible amount of amazing artisans out there, and i am repeatedly blown away by their talent. the store that i have been most recently ogling over is cinnamon cottage. the jewelry is simple, modern, and whimsical, a combination of everything i love. so, as you can guess, i was delighted when the husband bought me a couple pairs of her earrings for my birthday.

the earrings were adorably wrapped in this little box, with what looks like hand cut and hand written backings. so lovely + charming.

aren't they beautiful? i think they are perfect. exquisite craftsmanship too.

stir fried turkey in lettuce wraps

i have been interested in cooking with fish sauce for quite some time. so a few weeks (or more) ago, i bought a bottle on a whim at a chinese grocery store. coincidentally, i found this recipe shortly after in my jan issue of food magazine. even better, the march food magazine had several more recipes using fish sauce. excellent.
